Tolantongo River — The underground thermal river
A thermal river at 36°C (97°F) that flows 1.5 kilometers through a canyon with vertical walls. The most unique experience at the destination.
Mexico's most unique thermal river
The Tolantongo River is a thermal body of water that flows naturally through the canyon interior for approximately 1.5 kilometers. Unlike conventional rivers, its water comes entirely from the canyon's geothermal springs, maintaining its temperature at 36°C (97°F) year-round.
The river's course runs between limestone walls up to 800 meters high. In several stretches the river goes underground as it passes through natural caves and tunnels, creating a unique swimming experience where visitors alternate between open-air sections and illuminated grotto passages.
The river's depth varies between 50 cm and 1.5 meters depending on the stretch. It is walkable throughout its entire length, although water shoes with grip are recommended.
🌊 Stable temperature
36°C year-round. In winter the difference with the cold canyon air creates a thermal mist over the surface.
🕳️ Underground stretches
At several points the river passes through caves and tunnels. Bringing a flashlight is highly recommended.
🐟 Aquatic ecosystem
The river is home to small thermophilic fish adapted to geothermal conditions. Unique wildlife found nowhere else in the world.
