Why is thermal swimming at Tolantongo different?

Thermal swimming at Tolantongo does not take place in a man-made pool: it happens in natural limestone formations, inside caves with ceilings up to 15 meters high and in a river that flows through the interior of an 800-meter canyon. The constant 36°C temperature year-round allows you to enjoy bathing in any season.

The thermal effect of 36°C water has documented relaxing properties: it dilates blood vessels, reduces muscle tension and generates a sustained feeling of well-being. The high mineral content of the water (carbonates, bicarbonates and sulfates) adds additional properties to the bathing experience.

Unlike conventional spas that artificially heat water, at Tolantongo the heat is 100% geothermal: it comes from deep within the earth without any artificial intervention.

Questions about thermal swimming

Is there a depth limit for swimming?
In the grottoes the channel is 40–80 cm deep. In the pools it varies between 30 cm and 1.2 m. In the river it can reach 1.5 m in some stretches.
Can you swim in winter?
Yes. The constant 36°C temperature makes swimming in winter especially pleasant. On cold days the temperature contrast creates mist over the water, a unique visual spectacle.
Is it suitable for non-swimmers?
Yes. Most areas have manageable depth. The grottoes and the beginning of the river are perfect for those who cannot swim. Always go accompanied.
